How to Cut 1mm Natural Stone Panels

How to Cut 1 mm Natural Stone Panel on Fibre Backing - Cutting a 1 mm natural stone panel with a fibre backing is much easier than cutting traditional stone, but it still requires care to avoid cracking or fraying. Here’s a clear, practical guide used by installers:

Tools You Can Use

  • Sharp utility knife (Stanley knife) – best for straight cuts
  • Fine-tooth circular saw or track saw – for long, precise cuts
  • Jigsaw with fine blade – for curves and cut-outs
  • Angle grinder with diamond blade – for tougher or thicker areas
  • Straight edge/guide rail – essential for clean lines

Method 1: Score & Snap (Best for Straight Cuts)

This is the easiest and most common method.

  • Place the panel face up on a flat, stable surface
  • Use a straight edge to guide your cut
  • Score the surface firmly with a sharp utility knife (3-5 passes)
  • Once deeply scored, bend the panel gently along the line
  • The panel should snap cleanly, with the fibre backing holding it together
  • Trim the backing from the rear if needed

This method works well because the stone layer is very thin (1 mm).

Method 2: Saw Cutting (For Large Formats)

Best for long panels or thicker composite sections.

  • Use a fine blade (for laminates or metals)
  • Cut from the back side to reduce chipping on the stone face
  • Keep a steady, slow feed rate
  • Support the panel fully to prevent vibration

A track saw delivers the cleanest, most professional finish.

Method 3: Curves & Cut-Outs

For sockets, sinks, or design shapes:

  • Drill a pilot hole first
  • Use a jigsaw with a fine blade
  • Cut slowly to avoid tearing the backing

Important Tips

  • Always wear PPE: gloves, goggles, dust mask
  • Support the panel fully - these are flexible but can crack if unsupported
  • Use masking tape over the cut line to reduce chipping
  • Don’t rush - slow cuts = clean edges
  • Test on an offcut first

Pro Tip

Because these panels are so thin and flexible, you can often cut them like laminate rather than stone - that’s the key mindset shift.
